The son of legendary studio head Darryl F. Zanuck, Richard Zanuck entered the film business while still in college and produced his first feature, Compulsion (1959), at age 24. During his reign as head of production at 20th Century-Fox, the studio accumulated over 150 Oscar nominations, as well as three best picture awards. (See also Zanuck, Darryl F).
Zanuck formed the Zanuck/Brown company with former Fox colleague David Brown in 1972; among the team's successful collaborations were The Sting (1973), Jaws (1975) and Cocoon (1985) (also co-produced with third wife Lili Fini Zanuck). He dissolved his partnership with Brown in 1988 and formed the Zanuck Company the following year, sharing an Oscar with his wife for the company's first feature, Driving Miss Daisy (1989).
