TAYLOR, Robert
Amerikaans filmacteur (1969- )
* als: Spangler Arlington Brugh)
* Filley, NE 5.8.1911 - † 1969
The son of a country doctor, he attended Doane College
in Nebraska, where he
majored in music, then
followed his cello teacher to Pomona College in California.
His performance in a college production led to a screen test and a long-term
contract with MGM. Handsome to the point of prettiness, and billed as "The
Man
With the Perfect Profile," he vied with Clark Gable for popularity as
the screen's
top romantic star. He made his first real impact on a loanout to
Universal in
MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION (1935), and for the next 30 years he
remained one of
MGM's principal players, starring opposite some of the screen's
most glamorous
leading ladies, from Garbo and Harlow to Ava Gardner and
Elizabeth Taylor.
Taylor gradually got rid of the glamour-boy image and
developed into a mature
actor of solid character. He also acquired a reputation
among directors as a
no-nonsense professional who made up for any lack of depth
in his acting with
his serious attitude and hard work. During WWII he served as
a flight instructor
with the Navy's Air Transport. He also directed 17 Navy
training films and narrated
the feature-length documentary THE FIGHTING LADY
(1944). His personal life was
as earnest and scandal-free as his professional
career. He was married twice,
to Barbara Stanwyck from 1939 till 1951, and to
Ursula Thiess from 1954 until
his death of lung cancer at the age of 57.
