Studied at Nottingham School of Art where the teaching reacted against Victorian sentimentality. Inspired by the Newlyn colony of artists, she worked for 14 years in Staithes, Yorkshire, recording the traditional way of life learning about colour theory from Charles Mackie, and then in Newlyn. In 1919 she moved to London and became involved with the performing arts, painting in theatres, music halls and the circus, and during the War worked as a war artist. She was much involved with the Royal Academy and was created a Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1927.
