American actor, singer (1918-

Heavyset comic supporting player of the American stage, TV, and films. He began his professional career in 1939 after winning the Major Bowes Amateur Hour radio contest. After touring in vaudeville and during WWII with the USO, he made his Broadway debut in 1950 as Nicely-Nicely Johnson in Guys and Dolls a role he later repeated in the 1955 screen version.
