De broertjes Everly zongen al vanaf zeer jonge leeftijd (8, resp. 6 jaar oud) met hun ouders country and western liedjes voor de lokale radio in Kentucky. In 1957 hadden ze hun eerste eigen grote hit: Bye, bye, love. Deze werd gevolgd door een groot aantal andere, meestal in het weinig pretentieuze High-schoolgenre. Hiernaast bleven de Everly Brothers oude country & westernliedjes zingen, die o.a. voorkomen op de LP Songs our daddy tought us. Na de doorbraak begin jaren zestig van de Britse popmuziek in Amerika hadden de Everly Brothers nog maar incidenteel hits. Wel maakten ze de opzienbarende LP Roots (1968). In 1973 gingen de broers uit elkaar, maar geen van beiden slaagde in een solocarrière. Na tien jaar kwam het tot een verzoening, wat resulteerde in enige geslaagde comebackconcerten en de door Paul McCartney  geschreven hit On the wings of a nightingale. De stijl van de Everly's valt op door de bijzondere wijze van samenzang, waarmee ze latere close-harmonygroepen als The Beach Boys en zelfs The Beatles hebben beïnvloed. de 'Rock-rivival' aan het eind van de jaren zestig, deed de belangstelling voor hun muziek weer toenemen.

EVERLY BROTHERS

Amerikaans zangduo, bestaande uit Don Everly (1937) en  Phil Everly (1939). Zij speelden oorspronkelijk Country muziek. Toen echter de Rock & Roll opkwam, ontwikkelden zij een geheel eigen stijl binnen dit genre. Hun grootste succes hadden zij tussen 1957 en 1961. Tijdens de beat-periode raakten zij enigszins op de achtergrond
