James Clayton Day got his start as a teenaged steel guitar player on the Louisiana Hayride, working with a number of Hayride artists in the late 40's including Hank WiHiams and Faron Young. He also made an instrumental recording for Abbott records in the early 60's. Day, who eventually moved to a pedal steel, later worked extensively with Ray Priceos Cherokee Cowboys (in the late 60s) and made two albums for Philips in 1962 and 1963. He met Willie Nelson in the early 70's while Willie worked in The Cherokee Cowboys, and played on the often-reissued series of Nelson demo recordings for Pamper Music.

In the mid-70's, Day worked on and off with Price and then toured with Willie.

In addition, Day did substantial recording session work in Nashville. Day also worked with Willie after Willie moved to Austin in the early 70's, including work on his Shotgun Willie album in 1973. Day also did an album for DeWitt Scottos Mid-Land label in the late 70's.
