Education: Howard University, Washington DC Veteran black character player who began his acting career on the Broadway stage in the late 1940s. In 1961 Davis wrote and starred in the Broadway hit, Purlie Victorious, an irreverant send-up of racism in the Old South, which he then adapted for the screen as GONE ARE THE DAYS (1963). He made his film directorial debut in 1970 with an adaptation of Chester Hime's classic novel, Cotton Comes to Harlem, and subsequently directed KONGI'S HARVEST (1971), BLACK GIRL (1972), GORDON'S WAR (1973) and COUNTDOWN AT KUSINI (1976). More recently he has become a fixture in the films of Spike Lee, playing the football coach in SCHOOL DAZE (1988), the wise neighborhood drunk in DO THE RIGHT THING (1989) and delivering a eulogy in MALCOLM X (1992). Since 1948 Davis has been married to his frequent co-star Ruby Dee, with whom he hosted a radio and TV series and has been active in civil rights and humanitarian causes.
