Hij ontving zijn opleiding eerst te Glasgow en later te Oxford. Van 1866-1893 was hij professor in de moraal- filosofie te Glasgow, daarna "master" van Balliol College te Oxford. Hij behoort evenals zijn broeder John Caird (1820-1898) tot de Engelse denkers, die Hegel in Engeland bekend gemaakt hebben. E. Caird is zelf kritisch idealist en komt van Kant uit voortredenerend tot een Neo-Hegeliaans standpunt. God is voor hem niet onkenbaar (zoals voor Spencer). Hij is het oneindige en absolute.
