Baby Peggy MONTGOMMERY
film kindactrice (1917- )
Popular child star of the 20s; the Shirley Temple of her day. The daughter of a screen extra and stuntman, she entered films at age three and before reaching 10 starred in numerous two-reelers and more than a dozen features. Her popularity gradually diminished as she neared adolescence, but she continued appearing in films, mainly low-budget Westerns, under her full name, Peggy Montgomery, well into her late teens. Since retiring from the screen in the mid-30s, she has worked variously as a free-lance journalist, store manager, and executive of a greeting card company. In 1975 she authored, under a pseudonym, The Hollywood Posse, a book about the screen's cowboy extras and stuntmen. In 1979 she published Hollywood Children, an exposé on child stars. Her first husband was Gordon "Freckles" Ayres, at one time a popular member of the Our Gang comedy series.
