Loopbaan: student assistent planten anatomie RUL ( 1965-1968); British Council fellow Royal Botanic Gardens UK (1968-1969); medewerker Rijksherbarium (1969-1982); projectleider vergelijkende Morfologie Rijksherbarium (sedert 1982); bijzonder hoogleraar systematische plantenkunde (1987- 1991); gewoon hoogleraar en wetenschappelijk directeur Rijksherbarium/Hortus-Botanicus RUL (sedert 1991). Functies: hoofdredacteur IAWA Joumal; bestuurslid Stichting Levenswetenschappen; vele andere bestuursfuncties. Lid fellow Linneau Society of London; Koninklijke Nederlandse Botanische Vereniging; International Association of Wood Anatomics; Intemational Academy of Wood Science. Publicities: circa honderd twintig publicities in internationale tijdschriften; acht boeken waaronder 'New perspectives in wood anotomy' (1982); mede auteur 'The plant diversity of Malesia' (1989); 'Wood structure in biological and technological research' (1976).
